Jay.Keyz born Jorell Nacapuy is multi-talented - a producer, businessman, songwriter, and much sought after musician hailing from the North Shore of Oahu.
Fortunate to be born and raised by a musically inclined family, his varied styles and wide range of feels are evident in his performances. Early on, he was exposed to the local music scene as a cousin, Edwin Ramones, is a founding member of the Krush and his uncle, Mike Nacapuy is a first call bassist who played regularly with Hawaii’s Legends such as Loyal Garner. At the same time, he was listening to the classic music of powerhouse bands like Tower of Power and The Crusaders. The unwavering commitment his family had with their church choir opened his world to gospel music and performers such as The Winans.
Starting classical piano training at the tender age of four it wasn’t long before it became apparent that a unique talent was being forged. By the age of 15, Jay.Keyz was playing in the nightclubs of Waikiki. In 2005, Jay.Keyz joined the band Hot Rain, holding down the keyboards position. Hot Rain has backed International Reggae artists Jr. Reid, Petah Morgan from Morgan Heritage, Eek-A-Mouse, and Tanya Stephens.
In 2008 he became a member of the Andy Bumatai Band on the NightTime with Andy Bumatai television show for over a year until the show’s hiatus. During this time he had the honor of playing piano for Neil Sedaka.
Not only is Jay.Keyz the “go to guy” in the studio, he is a favorite of the producers for his ability to musically convert a producers ideas on the very first take, and for his relative ease of switching between the piano, synthesizer and organ. He has worked in the studio with Maxi Priest, Konishki, Fiji, DJ Audissey, Mike Love, Malani Bilyeu of Kalapana, Kawao, Siaosi, Kiwini, Laga Savea, B.E.T., and Conscious Roots to name a few. The list can go on.
As a keyboardist he has performed with Carmen Grillo and Rocco” Prestia from Tower of Power, J Boog, Fiji, Camille Velasco, Jasmine Trias, Melveen Leed, Natural Vibration, Opihi Pickers, Yvette Nii from Hiroshima, Claudia Vasquez, Keahi Conjication, Gabe Baltazar, Kapena and much more.
Jay.Keyz latest business venture is as a label owner. In 2010, Jay.Keyz along with his partners started the Afflatus Entertainment Group whose primary mission is:
to help bridge the gap between musical creativity and business. To provide artists with the proper representation and support needed in today’s competitive world market. To be there to assist, educate, inspire, and motivate all that choose to pursue success in our industry, and to simultaneously strive to be the leader and the follower, the teacher and the student
As a musician he has seen firsthand how this side of the music business fails to have a musician’s best interest in mind. He and his partners hope to change all this. In addition to the label plans to build a recording studio is in the works.
In 2010 he began work on a solo album Lovers Race -tastefully combining “lovers rock reggae” with his love of R&B and Jazz. Lover Race is a unique blend of styles - with interesting horn arrangements, jazz influenced chord progressions, reggae back beats, and smooth R&B vocals, Lovers Race is promising to be one for the books as there’s something in it which each of us can relate to. What else can you expect from someone who had such a diverse musical upbringing in Hawaii -the most multiethnic state in the country?
When asked what he hoped the people would get from his music Jay.Keyz responded:
“I just want my music to make people reminisce about something they've enjoyed or loved in their life. To take them back to a place where they've run to - to hide from any trial or tribulation they've gone through. They don't have to see the picture that I saw when I wrote the song, but if the song means something to them, if it means so much that they've painted their own picture with my music, then I've done my job. I'm just trying to bring back some innocent romance into the islands!”
Jay.Keyz frequently tours the Continental U.S., Fiji, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Chances are if you’ve heard some of the popular island Reggae music coming out of Hawaii, you’ve heard Jay.Keyz playing in the background.
